Jack Tizard School

The relocation of this special needs school from a Victorian building in Fulham to a new site in Shepherds Bush gave Sprunt the opportunity of combining two skills; working with children with severe special needs and building on a restricted, inner city site. Pupils at Jack Tizard are aged between 3 and 17 years and have severe learning and physical difficulties, including sensory impairments. Such considerations had an enormous effect on the design, requiring Sprunt to employ a variety of innovative features to satisfy both student and staff needs. As a result, the layout of the building has been carefully arranged to facilitate navigation, particularly for wheelchair users, using landmarks, colours and shapes. A curving wall leads pupils through the building and classrooms are colour coded inside and out. Sprunt worked closely with teachers to specially select colours to avoid over-stimulating children sensitive to certain hues.
